Queen Elizabeth II is the queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms. She is Head of the Commonwealth and Supreme Governor of the Church of England. She has held these positions since 1952, making her the longest-serving British monarch and the longest-serving queen regnant in world history. Born on April 21, 1926, in London, Elizabeth was the only child of Prince Albert, Duke of York, and Princess Elizabeth, the Duchess of York. Prince Albert had assumed the title of king as George VI when his older brother, Edward VIII, abdicated in 1936. Elizabeth was only six years old when she became heir to the throne.

During the war years, Elizabeth lived with her family at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace while her father served as monarch and her mother as queen-in-waiting. Elizabeth first attended a nursery school but advanced to classes with Alah Stewart Whitehouse at St. James’s School in Brighton from 1932 to 1940. From 1940 until 1946  Elizbeth studied as a boarder at the independent Hyde Park Amateur Ladies’ College in London. On April 9, 1947, she assumed the title Princess Elizabeth and began studying at Lady Meyers School in Saint Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands. She graduated from an advanced program in early 1949 and returned to England that June. That summer she worked as a volunteer at Saint John’s House emergency hospital in London’s East End. From September 1949 to March 1953, Elizabeth studied at Royal Holloway College of the University of London and obtained a degree in history. In November 1947, while still a princess, Elizabeth undertook her first solo trip to Scotland for the 750th anniversary of Saint Margaret  the queen’s ancestor.

On November 20, 1947, Elizabeth met her future husband, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, when she danced with him at the coronation ball for her father’s accession to the throne. They met again six months later on May 6, 1948, as Elizabeth toured Greece with her mother and sister. This time it was love at first sight. Over the next eight years they saw each other occasionally in Britain or overseas but did not begin courting until 1952. That year also marked the death of Princess Margaret, Elizabeth’s younger sister, who had remained unmarried and committed to royal service.

Prince Philip was born in Greece on June 10,  1921. He was the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Edinburgh. He was orphaned at age 10 and moved to Britain to be educated. In 1934, he began schooling at Saint Paul’s School in London, where he was known as Prince Philips and remained until 1939. During World War II he served with the Royal Navy and RAF, becoming a commander of the destroyer HMS Jervis and then commander of the destroyer HMS Whelp. After the war he continued his naval career, which included trips around the world. On July 26, 1947, while on a tour of Australia, Prince Philip met Princess Elizabeth’s aunt Princess Margaret. He soon developed romantic feelings for  the princess, though she was already engaged to the middle-ranking royal Lord Mountbatten.

On November 20, 1947, Elizabeth and her future husband, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, met for the first time.

The couple’s long courtship was complicated by Princess Margaret’s engagement to Mountbatten (who was part Jewish) and by Philip’s mixed Greek and Danish ancestry, which was viewed skeptically by Britain’s upper classes at the time. Elizabeth eventually forgave Philip for his family heritage and gave him her grandfather’s signet ring to signify her commitment. They wed on November 20, 1947, his birthday.

As queen consort

Philip has had a sometimes difficult relationship with the British public. He is a man of very strong opinions and isn’t afraid to speak them. He has gotten into arguments with climate change believers, for one, and often speaks candidly about his worries regarding the welfare of grandchildren George and Charlotte, whose health is kept tightly guarded.

Philip has also had to grow used to having a female ruler. According to Time, he early on told friends: “I’ll never get used to being called your highness.” He has never sat on the throne beside his wife, instead sitting immediately after her at formal dinners. But he does have a formal title: husband of  Queen Elizabeth II.

The couple has four children:
